What Is Shingles—and Why Prevention Matters

Shingles is a painful, blistering rash caused by reactivation of varicella-zoster virus (the chickenpox virus). Risk rises with age and in people with reduced immunity. Who Should Get Shingrix?

  • All adults ≥50 years—even if you’ve had shingles before or received the older live vaccine (Zostavax). No chickenpox testing is needed. (CDC)

Safety and Side Effects

The vaccine is non-live and generally well tolerated. Common, self-limited effects (1–3 days) include arm soreness/redness, fatigue, headache, chills, fever, and muscle aches. Grade-3 reactions that limit daily activity occur in a minority of recipients. (CDC)

Rare risk: The FDA includes a warning about a very rare increased risk of Guillain–Barré syndrome (GBS) within 42 days after vaccination; causality is not certain. Seek care urgently for new weakness/tingling. (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)

Who Should Delay or Avoid Vaccination?

Moderate or severe acute illness/fever: Delay until recovered. (General precaution)

Known severe allergy to any component or a previous Shingrix dose: Do not vaccinate.

Pregnancy: ACIP has no recommendation for use in pregnancy; consider delaying until after pregnancy. No pregnancy test is required before vaccination. Breastfeeding is not a contraindication. (CDC)
