Shingrix® Shingles Vaccine: Long-lasting Protection Against Shingles & Nerve Pain
Quick Summary
- Who needs it: All adults ≥50 years, plus immunocompromised adults ≥19 years. Two doses protect against shingles (herpes zoster) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN).
- Schedule: 2 doses (0.5 mL IM) 2–6 months apart; for some immunocompromised patients, dose 2 can be 1–2 months after dose 1. If you’re late, don’t restart—just complete the series.
- Efficacy: ~97% in adults ≥50 (ZOE-50) and ~91% in ≥70 (ZOE-70); protection remains high beyond a decade in long-term follow-up.
- Coadministration: Can be given the same day with other adult vaccines (e.g., influenza, COVID-19) at different sites.
- If you already had shingles: No fixed waiting period—vaccinate once the rash has resolved.
