CO2 Laser is a long-established skin treatment technology used to remove unwanted tissue, such as moles, age spots, and skin tags. Additionally, it can be adjusted to address signs of aging, stimulate collagen production, and help in the treatment of scars and acne scars. Learn more about the benefits and features of CO2 Laser in this article.

CO2 Laser, or Carbon Dioxide Laser, is a laser with a wavelength of 10,600 nanometers. It can cut and remove problematic tissue on the skin with minimal or no bleeding. This technology has been around for a long time and is still widely used in the treatment of various conditions, such as warts or certain types of skin cancer. In addition, it is also used in the field of aesthetics to stimulate collagen production and treat scars.

CO2 Laser offers two main benefits:

  1. Tissue Removal (Ablative CO2 Laser Mode)
This mode is used to remove or treat excess tissue by targeting it for destruction. It is suitable for:
    • Moles or freckles
    • Warts and rice warts
    • Skin tags
    • Milia
    • Enlarged sebaceous glands or other skin tumors
  2. Aesthetic Purposes (Fractional CO2 Laser Mode)
This mode uses fractional laser technology to resurface the skin and stimulate collagen production. It is ideal for:
    • Treating scars and acne scars
    • Reducing enlarged pores
    • Stretch marks
    • Skin rejuvenation and small wrinkles

Preparation Before Treatment:

  • Patients should avoid sun exposure for at least 1-2 weeks before the laser treatment.
  • Stop taking medications or herbs that affect blood clotting.
  • The doctor will assess the skin and provide instructions for preparation before treatment in all cases.

During the Treatment:

  • The treatment begins with an assessment of the problem area and the application of topical anesthesia on the treated area for at least 30-40 minutes, except in some areas where injectable anesthesia may be considered in certain cases.
  • The doctor will perform CO2 laser treatment while using smoke suction (which may produce a slight noise) and cooling air. Patients will be provided with protective glasses to prevent exposure to bright light from the lamp and the risk of laser exposure to the eyes.
  • The duration of the treatment depends on the amount and complexity of the lesions, which the doctor will assess before proceeding.

Post-Procedure Care for CO2 Laser:

  • The doctor will explain the post-treatment care in detail for each case.
  • Avoid getting the treated area wet for at least 24-48 hours.
  • Apply antibiotics ointment or cream as recommended by the doctor.
  • Do not rub or pick at the scabs; allow them to fall off naturally, which typically takes about 7-14 days.
  • After the scabs fall off, apply sunscreen and avoid sun exposure regularly for at least 2 weeks to reduce the risk of pigmentation after the laser.
  • Avoid using products with strong chemicals during the initial period after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions about CO2 Laser

Q: Does CO2 Laser hurt?

A: The CO2 Laser treatment may feel warm, but it is generally not very painful.

Q: How many sessions does it take to see results?

A: It depends on the issue being treated. For seborrheic keratosis or warts, the problem typically resolves after the first session. However, for moles, freckles, or enlarged sebaceous glands, there may be a chance of recurrence, or it may not be fully treated in the first session.

Q: Are there any side effects from CO2 Laser treatment?

A:
- There may be abrasions after treatment, which usually heal within 7-14 days. However, if the wound becomes dirty or moist, there is a risk of secondary infection, which could slow the healing process.

- Pigmentation, discoloration, or redness may occur after CO2 laser treatment. The doctor will assess and provide care if such side effects arise. Generally, pigmentation and discoloration can take 2-6 months to return to normal, while redness may take 3-4 weeks to a few months to fully heal. Strict aftercare can help reduce the risk of these side effects.
