What is Skin biopsyIG

What is a Skin Biopsy?

A Skin Biopsy is a minor dermatological procedure where a small piece of skin is removed and sent for pathology examination. It helps dermatologists diagnose uncertain or suspicious skin conditions, such as skin cancer, moles, chronic rashes, or other unexplained lesions.

At 22 Square Clinic, we offer two main types of skin biopsies:

  • Punch Biopsy – A small cylindrical blade (punch) is used to remove a core of skin. The wound usually requires sutures.

Shave Biopsy – A flat blade is used to shave off a superficial portion of the lesion. No stitches are needed.

Steps of a Skin Biopsy at 22 Square Clinic

1.Consultation & Assessment

The dermatologist reviews your medical history, examines the lesion, and explains why a biopsy is needed. Cost and procedure details are discussed, and informed consent is obtained.

2. Preparation

- The skin is cleansed.
- Local anesthesia is injected to minimize pain.
- Sterile instruments are prepared (punch blade, scalpel, suture materials).

3.During the Procedure

- Punch Biopsy: A 3–4 mm punch is used to remove the sample. The site is sutured with fine stitches, especially on facial areas.
- Shave Biopsy: The lesion is shaved with a flat blade. Bleeding is controlled with pressure or topical agents. No stitches are required.

4.Specimen Handling

- The skin sample is placed in a container with 10% formalin.
- All clinical details (name, date, biopsy site) are properly labeled and documented before being sent to the pathology lab.

5.Post-Procedure Care

- The wound is covered with a sterile dressing.
- For punch biopsy, stitches are removed at: ■ 7 days (if on the face) ■ 14 days (if on the body or extremities)
- For shave biopsy, no sutures are needed, and the wound is simpler to manage.

Why is a Skin Biopsy Important?

  • Confirms the diagnosis when a visual exam alone is not enough.

  • Detects skin cancers or precancerous lesions.

  • Identifies chronic inflammatory skin diseases, infections, or autoimmune skin disorders.
  • Provides crucial information for accurate treatment planning.

Aftercare Instructions

  • Clean and dress the wound daily as directed.
  • For punch biopsy, you may return to our clinic for wound care, or visit a nearby healthcare facility.
  • For shave biopsy, you can perform wound care at home after guidance from the doctor.
  • Avoid scratching, rubbing, or exposing the wound to unclean water.
  • Attend follow-up appointments for stitch removal (if any) and wound check.

How Long Does it Take to Get Results?

  • Pathology results are typically available within 7–14 days.
  • If the biopsy confirms skin cancer:
    • Some types can be managed with minor surgery or laser treatment at the clinic.
    • However, if the cancer is widespread or has invasive features, you will be referred to a hospital for advanced management (such as wide excision, radiotherapy, or systemic treatments).
  • If the lesion is benign, your doctor will discuss the results at your scheduled follow-up.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the procedure painful?

A: Local anesthesia is given, so you may only feel slight discomfort during the injection. The biopsy itself is painless.

Q: Do I need downtime?

A: No. You can resume normal activities immediately, but should care for the wound properly.

Q: Will there be a scar?

A: A small scar is possible, depending on the site, size, and healing. Our doctors use techniques to minimize scarring as much as possible.

Q: How soon are the results ready?

A: Within 7–14 days. You will be scheduled for a follow-up to review the results with your dermatologist.

Q: What happens if it’s skin cancer?

A: Early-stage skin cancers can often be treated with minor surgery or laser removal. If the cancer is more advanced or widespread, our team will refer you promptly to a hospital for specialized care.
