Let’s learn about skin cancer screening—a small step that should not be overlooked.

Did you know? Most skin cancers can be screened and completely treated.

What We Often Overlook: Skin Abnormalities

When we notice a black bump on our skin, we often dismiss it as a mole, freckle, or skin tag. However, these could be early warning signs of skin cancer. This is especially true for older adults who often neglect regular skin health check-ups, making skin cancer screening an essential step that should not be ignored.

The Greatest Danger: Laser Removal Without Screening

Removing skin lesions with a laser without prior screening may worsen cancer spread. This highlights the importance of Skin Cancer Screening as a preventive measure.

What Is Skin Cancer Screening?

Skin cancer screening involves the use of a dermoscope and visual examination by a dermatologist. The process evaluates all skin areas, including covered regions and the scalp, to detect abnormalities (commonly referred to as “ugly duckling signs”). If suspicious lesions are found, a biopsy is performed to determine if they are cancerous.

Types of Skin Cancer

Skin cancer can be categorized into two main groups:

  1. Melanoma:
    • Arises from abnormal pigment-producing cells.
    • The deadliest form of skin cancer.
  2. Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer:
    • Includes two major types:
      • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): Originates from basal skin cells; commonly found in Thai individuals.
      • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Derives from keratinocyte abnormalities.

Steps of Skin Cancer Screening

  1. Medical History:
    • Discuss risk factors, chronic illnesses, and family cancer history.
  2. Skin Examination:
    • A private room is used for a full-body examination with a dermoscope.
  3. Marking Suspicious Areas:
    • Identify and document abnormal lesions. Provide guidance and treatment options.
  4. Screening and Treatment:
    • The process takes approximately 20–30 minutes, depending on the number and complexity of lesions.
